Judy Sale’s background as an artist is as varied as the many countries where she has lived, worked and exhibited. In spite of being born in an uninspiring, small town in the middle of the USA, she has spent all her adult life living elsewhere; eight different countries in all. In 1993, she obtained dual nationality and today she is equally American and British, as well as European, in her outlook on all things. The ‘lived in’ experience of other cultures is therefore evident in the diversity of her abstract and eclectic styles of art practice over the years. Her work is never intended to be a reproduction of what is out there but rather a compilation of found objects, colours, textures and sometimes texts that are selected from findings along the way. She enjoys the challenge of taking something well read and putting it into another context, exploring the relationship of things old, new and just different. This is no doubt a result of her many ways of living in various cultures while making her own personal art work for her.
Besides her art practice, she has also found time to become actively and personally involved in restoring historic buildings. She is today responsible for a number of properties having been tastefully restored in Cyprus and Italy as well as in the UK. Using that same ability to pick up the pieces and start again as she has used in her life and ongoing practice as a professional artist, she strives to make a difference.
Her work is confident but quirky; colourful but unpredictable. “Change can be exciting when you learn to live with it and use it uncontrollably, especially uncontrollably”.
